Photo-A-Day 31

Kind of cheated with this one by just doing a collage of all the photos I've posted this month.  Got the idea from a friend of mine who does a lot of graphic design work, and thought it was a great idea.  It's nice to see a month's worth of work in one place.

Next month, back to knitting, crochet, spinning, weaving, quilting and any other fiber-related craft I can fit in.

Photo-A-Day 30

Category:  Rich Color
Subject:  Oxidized Highway Sign
Date Taken: August 20, 2013
Comments:  Walking along a crappy road in upstate NY, littered with junk folks throw out of their cars, I came upon this sign, and there were a number of them along this road, which seemed like a very fancy way of designating a highway.  The signs go virtually unnoticed.  Using brass to designate various sections of a highway must have been seen as normal in 1963.  Nevertheless, I found the verdigris patina to be a wonderful anachronism in 2013.

Photo-A-Day 29

Category:  Deep, Smoky Colors
Subject:  Quilting Fabrics
Date Taken: August 25, 2013
Comments:  Trying to find a way to use a big stack of fat quarters my friend Liza gave me of Kaffe and Brandon fabrics.  The sewing of theses parallelograms has been difficult, but I'm loving how it's turning out.  One of my favorite "blending colors" is the antique gold/greenish color surrounding some of the stars (not the yellow patterned fabric...the other one).  I've found I can mix almost any equally weighted, broody color with it to get an effect I really love.

Photo-A-Day 28

Category:  Manmade Organic Shapes
Subject:  Road Exit
Date Taken: August 20, 2013
Comments:  This was by far my most labor-intensive photo to-date.  It was taken from an overpass while I was out walking last week, and the sun was behind me, casting a shadow that I didn't want in the photo.  I waited for the sun to go down behind some trees, so that it was still light enough to take the photo, but cast no shadows.  I then took this shot from about 30 different angles, trying to find the one that was most aesthetically pleasing from an overall composition.

Photo-A-Day 27

Category:  Aesthetic Interest
Subject:  Candle stick and candle
Date Taken: August 25, 2013
Comments:  One of my favorite gifts of an odd nature is this candle stick...the colors are rich and deep, and the graphic of the heart-face is intriguing and delightful (to me).  It took us a while to find an appropriate candle for this piece, but I love what we came up with.

Photo-A-Day 26

Today's photo is actually a completed project that again, complies with the criteria for my daily photo selections.

Category:  Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Baby Blanket knit with Mini Mochi
Date Taken: August 25, 2013
Comments:  Normally, colorways in yarn dyed commercially leave something to be desired for me, but this yarn (it's actually 4 balls of one colorway, and 1 ball of a second colorway) has everything I like in a long-repeat dyed's deep, broody colors...many random stripes and a palette that I find very satisfying.

Current Knitting

I finished the Mini Mochi baby blanket.  Here's the boring from-up-above photo of the completed blanket.

I used a simple garter-rib (3 x3) with a minimal garter boarder.  Simple and easy and even after a washing, I find the fabric soft and beautiful.

Photo-A-Day 25

Category:  Graphic Interest
Subject:  Random Poster
Date Taken: August 19, 2013
Comments:  Not sure what it is.  Not sure why it's there.  Not sure when someone put it there.  All of which made this poster fascinating to me.  On the side of a busy road, in an overgrown area between the road and a service road behind it, sits this electric box, nestled in weeds that make it virtually impossible to see from the road.  I loved the poster.  I loved the surprise of finding it unexpectedly.  I can only hope the whimsy of it all translates to a photograph.

Photo-A-Day 24

Category:  Vibrant Color
Subject:  Playground Climbing Equipment
Date Taken: August 19, 2013
Comments:  The bright sculptural beauty of these playground toys caught my eye in a very pleasing way, both from a color perspective, but also from a sculptural one.  Amazing how far playground design has come since my childhood.

Photo-A-Day 23

Category:  Color Combinations
Subject:  Hotel Sign Logo
Date Taken: August 19, 2013
Comments:  Seeing this hotel chain's logo sign, I wanted to capture this image both because I think the graphic is interesting (somewhat), but more so to remind me to play with green and brown as a fascinating combination of colors.

Photo-A-Day 22

Category:  Nature and Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Poisonous Berries
Date Taken: August 19, 2013
Comments:  All through my childhood, I saw these luscious looking, deep red berries growing, and despite how appealing they looked, I was always warned they were poisonous.  I have no idea if they are or aren't poisonous, but I loved the close-up of them against the out-of-focus foliage in the background.

Photo-A-Day 21

Category:  Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Jersey Tomatoes
Date Taken: August 15, 2013
Comments:  Two of my favorite things...fresh Jersey tomatoes from a local farm stand and a vivid green bowl.  Not colors I would normally pair up, but I'm pleased with the outcome none the less.

Photo-A-Day 20

Category:  Bright Colors
Subject:  Common Garden Flowers
Date Taken: August 15, 2013
Comments:  Neighbors have planted a number of pink/purple and yellow flowers outside their home and along their walk and each time I go by, the contrast of these two colors always catches my eye.  Simple marigolds and zinnias can create such a lovely, natural arrangement of colors.

Photo-A-Day 19

Category:  Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Koigu Interlocking Crochet Scarf
Date Taken: August 18, 2013
Comments:  Today's photo is of the completed scarf project I've been working on.  Koigu produces some amazing colorways (or colourways as they might type it) of their KPPPM yarn and I love how this stitch pattern blends them in a way that doesn't make the overall effect muddy, but has sparks of color bursting out everywhere.

Current Knitting

As noted in the photo section, I was able to finish a project, and since the Koigu Interlocking Crochet Scarf is so colorful, I could use it in my daily photo posting as well.  Here's another photo of the completed scarf.

I do have a few ends to weave in, and I made a slight "design element" change (aka mistake) but I like the randomness of how the "mistake" looks, so it truly could have been a design element.

Photo-A-Day 18

Category:  Rich Broody Colors
Subject:  Cannis Leaf
Date Taken: August 15, 2013
Comments:  We grow at least on large pot of this plant every year, saving the tubers each year.  Soon it will flower, a bright red flower which is very small compared to the broad leaf of the plant, but it's the leaves I find so beautiful each year.  The deep green, tinted with the merlot stems and edges.  The richness of this foliage makes me happy every year.

Photo-A-Day 17

Category:  Bright Colors
Subject:  Summer Flower Bloom
Date Taken: August 15, 2013
Comments:  Summer is by far my favorite season of the year, with all of its luscious fruits, bright sunny days and of course, bright garden flowers.  The rich verdant green leaf of this flower is a perfect back-drop for the bold colors of reds, pinks and yellows.

Photo-A-Day 16

Category:  Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Section of an Indian Fabrics Quilt
Date Taken: August 13, 2013
Comments:  Textures and colors as well as metallic threads all combine beautifully in this textile hanging in my favorite Indian restaurant. Today's photo was again taken with my iPhone, so the quality isn't quite as good as I would have hoped, but it was a perfect example of richness of colors that I couldn't possibly miss out on.

Photo-A-Day 15

Category:  Vibrant Colors
Subject:  Beached Kayaks
Date Taken: August 7, 2013
Comments:  I loved the vivid green and blue kayaks on the darker green sea grass.  Today's photo is also a great reminder of my time on Martha's Vineyard where the photo was taken. This was also taken with my iPhone since I didn't have access to my digital SLR camera at the time.

Photo-A-Day 14

Category:  Photoshopped Colors
Subject:  Glass mushroom
Date Taken: August 11, 2013
Comments:  This was the only photo I've actually given a title to..."Mushroom Cloud"...I was amazed that I could keep the rich cobalt color of the glass mushroom, yet completely purple-haze the out-of-focus background to give the overall photo such a dramatic look.

Photo-A-Day 13

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Glass Mushrooms
Date Taken: August 11, 2013
Comments:  I've always been fascinated with colored glass.  Whether it's the soft, etched colors of sea glass, or the vibrant colors of handblown objects, I am a big fan. And vibrant, sultry greens are always a big favorite.

Photo-A-Day 12

Category:  Nature
Subject:  Butterfly on Lantana Flower
Date Taken: August 2, 2013
Comments:  I was thrilled to be able to capture this beautiful creature on such a pretty flower.  I'm not one who looks for nature photos, so when I happen upon one like this butterfly, it's a complete joy and surprise.

Current Knitting

Having been on vacation for the past week, I did very little fact, I finally brought out my Koigu Interlocking Crochet Scarf project and promptly lost the only crochet hook I had with me.

Photo-A-Day 11

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Sliced tomato
Date Taken: July 27, 2013
Comments:  Enjoyed seeing how the slices of deep read tomato formed almost a heart shape.  The meaty red tomato always reminds me of the freshness of summer gardens.

Photo-A-Day 10

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Close up of a Lantana flower
Date Taken: July 28, 2013
Comments:  Purple and yellow has always been one of my favorite color combinations and with the unfocused green and grey in the background, it made the colors even more vibrant for me.

Photo-A-Day 9

Category:  Color, Texture and Composition
Subject:  Two peaches
Date Taken: July 27, 2013
Comments:  Almost like a part of a classic still life painting, I was drawn to the softness and the color shading of this beautiful fruit.

Photo-A-Day 8

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Close up of a Rose Walton painting
Date Taken: July 15, 2013
Comments:  The simple colorblock dresses against the green hill and the bright white bows and shoes are just a joy to look at.

Photo-A-Day 7

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Close up of a tea towel
Date Taken: August 1, 2013
Comments:  Loved the deep red representation of a lobster on this textile with the simple greens behind it.  Felt very Oriental looking for me.

Photo-A-Day 6

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Hand blown glass bowl
Date Taken: July 27, 2013
Comments:  Mostly, I wanted to find a way of photographing this beautiful glass bowl so that its true beauty could be shown in a photo.  Despite multiple attempts, the photo still doesn't quite convey how richly colored this glass is.

Photo-A-Day 5

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Tomato soup in chartreuse bowl
Date Taken: July 27, 2013
Comments:  The rich, deep red of the roasted tomato soup in the acidy green chartreuse bowl really caught my eye.

Photo-A-Day 4

Date Taken: July 15, 2013
Comments:  I love this artist's unflinching confidence in painting bold shapes of strong colors.

Photo-A-Day 3

Category:  Vivid Color/Nature
Subject:  Chanterelle mushroom
Date Taken: July 15, 2013
Comments:  The deep rich color of a freshly foraged chanterelle and the ruffled trumpet shape make it one of the most beautiful mushrooms for me.

Photo-A-Day - Day 2

Having completely forgotten that August 1st was yesterday, and I promised to post a photo-a-day during August, I'm glad to have posted a blog entry which included a photo!

Today's Photo

Category:  Vivid Color
Subject:  Closeup portion of a painting by Paul Matthews of Kafka
Date Taken: July 15, 2013
Comments:  Love how the artist added unusual colors to the face of Kafka and also found the red/green color combination interesting and vibrant and beautiful.

Exercising The Brain

I've always had a terribly's like sometimes entire conversations just go missing from my brain.

Working On It

It seems that three things seem to help with helping me remember things:

  1. Stress reductions - when I'm stressed, my memory is worse, and whatever I can do to reduce stress (meditate, massage, sleep, etc.) seems to help me remember things.
  2. Vitamins - when I stick with a regimen of taking a good, natural multi-vitamin, I don't have as many problems forgetting things.
  3. I forgot the third....hmmm...oh yeah, it's exercising my mind and forcing myself to remember things I might otherwise just let go with the excuse of a bad memory.
The exercise part comes with playing word games on my iPhone.  I play Whirly Word and try to make sure I come up with every possible word listed before I go on to the next game.  Not always possible, but I get most of the words.

The forcing myself to remember things, often happens with peoples' names or song titles.  I will go through multiple exercises to try and make myself remember...going through the alphabet, thinking about names of other people I know, trying to remember if I've set some mnemonic for the person, etc.  Again, it doesn't always work, but I think just the exercise helps strengthen my memory.

Current Crochet

I've added a couple of more rows to the Koigu Interlocking Crochet Scarf.

You can see, that even once I'v finished the scarf, I have a few colorful ends to weave in.
